Doug Aitken: UNDER THE SUN
Project type
Gallery / Museum Show
Date
December 2025 - February 2026
Location
NMACC Art House, Mumbai, India
Role
Exhibition Designer
UNDER THE SUN marked Doug Aitken's first major exhibition in India and one of the first large-scale presentations of a leading contemporary Western artist in the country, developed through years of exchange between Mumbai and Aitken's studio. Spanning three floors organized around Past, Present, and Future, the exhibition wove together hand-embroidered textiles inspired by India's river systems, indigenous wood sculptures, and immersive film and light environments to explore the intersections of tradition and technology, the handmade and the digital. The acclaimed film installation New Era — tracing the invention of the cellphone — was presented within a mirrored chamber creating an infinite field of light and reflection, while the new commission LIGHTFALL / OTHER WORLDS closed the exhibition as a monumental sculptural instrument merging light, sound, art, and performance.
